Birds
Birding in Newberry Country provides some of the best year-round birding in the Central Oregon Region. From Lakeview to Sunriver opportunities exist to observe birds close and afar. The Christmas Valley, Ft. Rock, Summer Lake and Paisley areas are known for their wintering raptors. Rough-legged Hawks, Golden Eagles, Bald Eagles and Red-tailed Hawks concentrate in these areas from November through March. Paisley is a great place to observe migrating Sandhill Cranes in March and early April.
Summer Lake Wildlife Management Area offers an eight mile drive loop where resident Sandhill Cranes can often be seen with their Colts during late spring and early summer. Dozens of other species also breed in this location such as American Avocets, Black-necked Stilts, Snowy Plovers, and Yellow-headed Blackbirds. Cabin Lake draws birders from all over the country to see the abundant Crossbills and Pinyon Jays. Green-tailed Towhees, White-headed Woodpeckers and Lewis’s Woodpeckers are other must-see species at this location. Wickiup Reservoir offers birding year-round especially in spring and fall. Sunriver Nature Center offers some excellent birding and a breeding pair of Trumpeter Swans.
