ANNUAL EVENTS
Frontier Days--every year around July 4 Four days of fun! Each year has different activities, depending on the vendors, but there's always a fishing pond! Kids games, petting zoo, stick pony races, bouncy houses, face painting, and Powerwheel races (bring your own Powerwheel) are among the fun. There's also dancing to the bands in the evening and watching fireworks. Dogs are welcome on leash.
The funnest ever! I got dunked in the dunk tank and petted a donkey and fished with a fishing stick and ate a funnel cake and corn dog and noodles and cotton candy. That was the first day. The lawnmower races were so fun and I got to race in a Powerwheels. I didn't win, but I got mixed up and went the wrong way and that was fun! ~Krabington
Harvest Depot always decorates inside and out for Halloween. Stop in for a spooky meal or two.
Last year it was verrrry verrrry scary. This Halloween I'm gonna be a ghost and scary them back! ~Krabington
Trunk or Treat with La Pine Park and Rec. They have a haunted house, too. Safe fun for the kids!
I love Trunk or Treat! Lots and lots of candy! And then I go to the haunted house! Hooray! I get enough to share with Crusty.~Krabington
Trick or Treat tour! Get your list of local businesses in the South County Shopper at stores or online. There are crossing guards for crossing Highway 97. The participating businesses are listed in the South County Shopper before Halloween.
Crusty works every Halloween at the Chamber of Commerce on the Trick or Treat tour. He likes to dress up as a pirate! Yo ho ho and a recyclable bottle of salted lemonade! So I go around town with friends and then go back to see Crusty. The crossing guards on the highway keep me safe! ~Krabington
The Frontier Days Fourth of July Parade is on July 4th. Miss Frontier Days, the Grand Marshal, and lots of patriotic floats and more.
If you want, you can enter the parade.
I watched all the floats and cheered and waved, and some Float People waved back. Some brought candy to us. They aren't supposed to throw it because I might get hurt running to get it. Crusty says that float drivers can't always see little crabs, even though I can see them. That wouldn't be good. But the parade is really funnest! ~Krabington
It's dark and often cold, but the Christmas Lights Parade is always a hit. So many floats by friends and neighbors, ready for you to enjoy the winter in La Pine.
You can enter this parade, too.
Lights and lights and lights and candy and Santa Claus!~Krabington
Local craftspeople, food, lunch, prizes, visits with Santa, and more! A great place to do Christmas shopping.
I got to visit Santa, but I was too shy to sit on his lap. I got a cake pop and Crusty bought lots of Christmas gifts for all the crabs back home. They had a fun game where they would ask everyone to stand on a number and they called out a number and they called mine and I won a prize from one of the Bazaar people!~Krabington
I like alll the Day Trips, I explore caves, and pretend I am a logger, and go fishing, and kayak, and hike until allll 10 of my legs are tired! Oouf!
But these are my very favoritiest day trips. Crusty says you’ll find alll of the Day Trippin Itineraries (that’s a big word that means . . . I think it means adventure!) above. ~Krabington
Water slides are great fun! The hike to the slides isn't too hard, but make sure you have shoes that will keep your feet out of hot dust. You'll find out all about it in our Paulina Slides Day Trippin' Itinerary.
One slide is smaller and not as scary and Crusty can catch me when I slide down. There's a pool to play in and rocks. I pretend I'm defending my tide pool from sharks and dinosaurs! This summer I think I'm going on the big slide! But it's OK if I don't. ~Krabington
Ridable model trains of every type imaginable through acres of forest. A great way to spend a day for those old enough to stay in their own individual seats throughout the adventure! Check our Day Trippin' Itinerary for more information.
It was soooo exciting! I wanted to jump onto Crusty's seat and tell him allll about it. But Crusty and the Train Engine Person said I had to stay in my seat. I did, but it was really hard. A funnest train. Choo choo! ~Krabington
Close to town and only 1.7 miles to hike around, South Twin Lake has boat, kayak, paddle board and peddle boat rentals and a shore that warms up enough to swim. There's a convenience store with bug spray and sun screen, snacks and fishing supplies, and there's a restaurant with beautiful views. (Check hours) There is Deschutes National Forest camping by the lake and across the street.
We hiked and played in the water and I rented a paddle boat and played with other kids. I was the bestest swimmer.
Sunriver has a lot of family-oriented activities, and you don't have to stay at the resort of take advantage! There are bike rentals and bike paths--paved and unpaved--that keep you safe from traffic. Click and check out what's available.
We rented bikes and I rode and rode. We raced and stopped, searched for bugs and explored. And I didn't have to be careful of cars. ~Krabington
Diamond Lake Resort has so much to do, including accessible adventures. Rent a bike or bring your own and explore the Diamond Lake area trails.
I always like riding bikes and we had such fun around Diamond Lake. I kept getting off and going for a swim, though. ~Krabington
Guided horseback rides, pony rides, and even winter sleigh rides! Sunriver has great opportunities to enjoy the outdoors with a horse.
I used to ride a pony but I'm big enough for a horse now, and I love to giddyup. I also love riding in a sleigh and singing really loud! ~Krabington
Diamond Lake also has accessible horseback riding. Rent a horse and take a guided tour through the national forest!
It is a very exciting ride! I pretended I was an explorer~Krabington
PLAYGROUNDS
Finley Butte Park, 51390 Walling Lane
Small playground next to baseball and pickle ball facilities. Not intended for the littlest crabs or kids.
I like the twisty slides and the climbing walls. Sometimes Crusty takes me onto the field when it isn't being used and we play catch.~Krabington
La Pine Frontier Heritage Park 16425 First Street
Small fenced playground next to the Community Center. The large grass area next to it is great for running around, as well as snow angels and snowball fights in the winter. Bring your bat and ball.
I really like swings and the fence keeps me from accidentally getting into the street, and I looove letting the lion eat my head when I get a drink! Roarrrrrr!!! And the liberry is next door!~Krabington
Right next to the Frontier Heritage Park, La Pine's library is a great place to visit for a break in an exciting day--and then head on back to the Newberry Country Trail.
Oh wow! Liberries are reallllly fun! I bring my favoritest books when I visit Crusty, but I loooove reading new books, too, and they have lots and lots of books with the words really big and pictures, and I can even read some of the words! And there are toys and smooshy chairs. And it's all my size! I can imaginate anything here! ~Krabington
In Sunriver, the most accessible observatory in the United States, see the stars up close and personal. There's a planetarium in a tent, telescopes, and a gift shop. Interesting and educational.
I get to stay up late in the summer to look at the stars. There is sooo much to do. I like the tent planetarium. It's kinda like camping under the stars.
Sustainablity in an infinite space. Oregon's Dark Sky Sanctuary is the largest in the world--about the size of Virginia. Find a place to view what you can't see at home. Consider camping under the stars at Green Mountain Campground. You can find more about it through the Crack in the Ground Day Trippin' itinerary
Now I get to stay up late outside. The stars are sooo pretty that they even stop me running around to look at them and sing a Twinkle song. At least for a while. Crusty brings his telescope and we camp and eat s'mores and we have a great time. ~Krabington
Little adventurers aged 3 and up can ride the dog sleds with an adult. Feed the dogs, get to know your musher and have a great time.
I was sooo excited when I had my third birthday because I was big enough to do a dog sled ride! I can help feed the dogs and talk to the musher--who does not get breakfast for people or crabs, but makes the dogs go. One picture is of Crusty being silly and pretending the dogs carry their own lunch in lunch boxes. It really is fun! ~Krabington
Crusty and Krabington Crab provide the content for our Kids’ Page. Crusty is the La Pine Frontier Days and La Pine Chamber of Commerce Ambassador. Krabbington lives in Crustfurt, Pacific Ocean (near Astoria) with their parents. Krabington loves to visit Crusty and have adventures in Newberry Country.
